Description:
Abstract:
GeologicSoils_SOAG includes a pre-selected subset of SSURGO soil data depicting prime agricultural soils in Vermont. The SSURGO county coverages were joined to the Top20 attribute table. The joined data set was then reselected on the PRIME attribute for a value not equal to NPSL or Water. This ensured that all soil units with a prime rating were selected.
Purpose:
Provide a pre-selected subset of SSURGO soil data depicting prime agricultural soils in Vermont.

VCGI and the State of VT make no representations of any kind, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular use, nor are any such warranties to be implied with respect to the data.
Use_Constraints:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service, should be acknowledged as the data source in products derived from these data.
This data set is not designed for use as a primary regulatory tool in permitting or citing decisions, but may be used as a reference source. This is public information and may be interpreted by organizations, agencies, units of government, or others based on needs; however, they are responsible for the appropriate application. Federal, State, or local regulatory bodies are not to reassign to the Natural Resources Conservation Service any authority for the decisions that they make. The Natural Resources Conservation Service will not perform any evaluations of these maps for purposes related solely to State or local regulatory programs.
Photographic or digital enlargement of these maps to scales greater than at which they were originally mapped can cause misinterpretation of the data. If enlarged, maps do not show the small areas of contrasting soils that could have been shown at a larger scale. The depicted soil boundaries, interpretations, and analysis derived from them do not eliminate the need for onsite sampling, testing, and detailed study of specific sites for intensive uses. Thus, these data and their interpretations are intended for planning purposes only. Digital data files are periodically updated. Files are dated, and users are responsible for obtaining the latest version of the data.

Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Soil unit boundaries are interpreted from soil test pit data, thus they are inherently approximate. Linework was captured to within a tolerance of approximately a line width, corresponding to approximately 6 meters (about 20 feet) at the RF 20,000 mapping scale. The locational accuracy of soil delineations on the ground varies with the transition between map units. For example, on long gently sloping landscapes the transition occurs gradually over many feet. Where landscapes change abruptly from steep to level, the transition will be very narrow.
Refer to the GeologicSoils_SO layer's metadata for additional documentation.

SOAG coverages were regenerated using the latest SSURGO certified data (Orleans became available along with updated versions of Lamoille and Franklin County). See GeologocSoils_SOnn metadata for details. The latest NRCS top20_vt.dbf (released by VT NRCS on October 11, 2005) was used to create the SOAG coverages based on the PRIME attribute in the top20_vt.dbf table. NRCS documentation specified that the PRIME ratings were updated in Sept 2004 as noted "This information comes from the report titled Farmland Classification Systems for Vermont Soils, dated April, 2003, revised September, 2005." Data was loaded into the VGIS Data Warehouse for distribution. This metadata record was updated to reflect the changes.

Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Soil map units are Prime Farmland if they have the best combination of physical and chemical characteristics for producing food, feed fiber, forage, and oilseed crops and are also available for these uses. The present land use may be cropland, pasture, forestland, or other land uses, but not urban and built-up or water. Location, tract size, and accessibility to markets and support industries are not considered when making a Prime Farmland determination. For further info see Prime.txt included in download.
Attribute_Domain_Values:
Enumerated_Domain:
Enumerated_Domain_Value: Statewide
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
This is land, in addition to Prime Farmland, that is of Statewide importance for the production of food, feed, fiber, forage, and oilseed crops. In Vermont, criteria for defining and delineating Statewide Important Farmland was determined by the appropriate state agencies, working with the Natural Resources Conservation Service. For further info see Prime.txt included in download.

Enumerated_Domain:
Enumerated_Domain_Value: Local
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
In some areas, there is a need to identify additional farmlands for the production of food, feed, fiber, forage, and oilseed crops that has not been identified by the other categories in the Important Farmland system. These lands can be identified as Additional Farmland of Local Importance by the appropriate local agencies. In places, Additional Farmlands of Local Importance may include tracts of land that have been designated for agriculture by local ordinance. For further info see Prime.txt included in download.

Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
If the upper slope class limit of the soil map unit is between 9 and 15 percent then the areas of the soil map unit that exceed 8 percent slope don't qualify as Prime, Statewide, or Local. If the upper slope class limit exceeds 15 percent then the areas of the soil map unit that exceed 15 percent slope don't qualify as Important Farmland.
Attribute_Domain_Values:
Enumerated_Domain:
Enumerated_Domain_Value: Footnote "b"
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
The soils in this soil map unit have a wetness limitation that may be difficult and/or unfeasible to over come. Areas of this soil map unit don't qualify as Prime, Statewide, or Local, if artificial drainage is not feasible.

Enumerated_Domain:
Enumerated_Domain_Value: Footnote "c"
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Bedrock outcrops commonly cover more than 2 percent of the surface. Areas of this soil map unit will not qualify as Prime, Statewide, or Local, if bedrock outcrops are extensive enough to prohibit efficient farming.
