Actual 7.5' quads are slightly curved along the edge lines, due to the curvature of latitude and longitude lines along the earth's surface. This curvature is negligible at RF 24,000 scale, so straight lines were used to connect the corners. The tics in QUAD can be used to digitize 7.5' quadrangles in State Plane meters; however, 15' quadrangles and smaller scale USGS maps should be digitized in their original UTM projection, and projected to State Plane as needed.

Actual 7.5' quads are slightly curved along the edge lines, due to the curvature of latitude and longitude lines along the earth's surface. This coverage was digitally generated with single line segments between quadrangle corners. 7.5' quads are uniquely identified by IDTIC, INDEX, or QUADNAME (see item descriptions). Although the USGS quads are in a Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection, the State Plane projection is also a Transverse Mercator projection. You can digitize the 7.5' quads NAD27 using the tics in State Plane coordinates, because any error introduced by digitizing in State Plane is negligible (on the order of a few thousandths of an inch). Thus it is not necessary to digitize the 7.5' quads in UTM coordinates and project into State Plane.

The quadrangle corners and tics are as accurate as the PROJECT command which converted the coordinates from latitude-longitude to state plane meters. Coordinates are expected to be accurate to within a meter. The straight lines connecting the corners do not reflect the slight curvature of the latitude and longitude on the USGS maps. However, the curvature is so slight that error along the quadrangle edges is considered negligable.
