Product Description: This DVD product contains a set of georeferenced, compressed images (MrSid) generated from the 2003 National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) TIFF ortho images. The NAIP color orthophotos were created by the Aerial Photography Field Office (APFO) of the USDA. The orthophotos are available from APFO (and authorized resellers) as a "public record". However, "raw" TIFF images include a 360 meter buffer. This makes it difficult to use adjacent images because the of the overlap of the adjoining image. Also, the raw NAIP imagery is in Universal Transverse Mercator projection (UTM) NAD83. This is incompatible with Vermont's Spatial Data Infrastructure, which is in Vermont State Plane Meters (NAD83).  

The image files included with this product have been processed in order to address these limitations, including:

1. Removal of 360 meter image buffer
2. Re-projection into Vermont State Plane Meters NAD83

VCGI does not distribute the NAIP imagery in UTM or uncompressed format. For information on ordering the NAIP imagery in UTM (and uncompressed format), contact APFO.

Note: The Vermont Mapping Program offers a full resolution version of the 2003 NAIP in VCS NAD83.

Imagery is available for most of the state of Vermont. To figure out the exact geographic extent covered by the NAIP 2003 imagery, please review the NAIP2003 Index Map (pdf). Please note the small band accross the nothern border of the state that has no NAIP 2003 coverage.

Technical Documentation:

MrSid Image files included on this DVD product were developed from USDA Aerial Photography Field Office 1:40000 source scale 1 meter resolution NAIP TIFF images. The source images were manipulated as follows:

1. The TIFF files were converted into Arc/Info GRID format by VCGI.
2. Image buffers were removed using the SETWINDOW GRID command, using the extent of the quarter quad index.
3. Files were re-projected into Vermont State Plane Meters NAD83 using the GRIDWARP GRID command.
4. Arc/Info GRIDs were converted back to TIFF format.
5. Reprojected TIFF images were compressed to MrSid format using a 1:20 ratio.
